Busselton Health Study statement on Busselton water chlorination issue - May 2010 The Busselton Health Study, governed by the Busselton Population Medical Research Institute, has conducted health surveys of adults and children resident in the Shire of Busselton since 1966. While the data from the surveys have provided very valuable information on many health issues, the Foundation does not have access to data that are relevant to assessing health risks associated with the level of micro-organisms or the level of chlorine disinfection by-products in the Busselton water supply. A whole population analysis (ie all people whether survey participants or not) that uses cancer registration and population census data held in the WA Department of Health could be used to compare cancer rates in residents of Busselton, which have so far been supplied with non-chlorinated water with other south-west areas that have had chlorinated water. However, the number of cancer cases would be so low that the estimate of relative risk would be inaccurate and hence no conclusions could be drawn about the risk to health. |
